What I am learning and changing

It has to come out. Number 50 (Ignore people that upset me) was originally about a specific person.

But it is a good rule! I tend to dwell on people, things, and events that rattle my feelings, and that in turn makes me feel even worse. So, I will stick with what I wrote, and not what I secretly meant. However, this does not mean I can't focus on ignoring.

That sounds crazy, I know. What do I mean? I mean that I have recently met a girl who wants the same thing that I do. Complete ignore-ation of the same person. And we have bonded quickly over this.

Things that must be said:

  • We do have more in common than simple disdain.
  • We did meet before, but thought nothing (everything?) of it at the time.
  • We have the common goal of putting this person behind us and never having to deal with them in any way ever again
  • We know that, if we had met before we knew this person, this person would not be the spark of our friendship and that-would-be-just-fine-thank-you-very-much.
In short: I will focus on keeping my eyes and ears away from things that could deliberately and unnecessarily upset me. But I will not in any way forget what the intent was and how this has given me a wonderful friend.

Bloggy Carnival Things :-D

I am usually not afraid to say "Hey! Look at me!" if I think something is great. Like when I bought $200 worth of clothing at NY&C for nothing. Or whenever I have some minor success and I think EVERYONE needs to know. Like when I sent my entire extended family on a scavenger hunt by getting this mention by a favorite author (apparently the link gets broken on some computers).

So, forgive me while I postpone #59 (Learn to be more humble) for at least one more day.

Do you not LOVE my new blog design? This is the template I won during the Bloggy Giveaways Carnival. Amanda at Beautiful Blog Designs gave away a premade template from Delicious Design Studio, and as I mentioned in a previous post, I was the lucky winner (thanks again, Amanda!).
I have taken advantage of my other winnings as well, and will be getting an awesomely cute pincushion from The Puddle People! This is what it looks like, save the colors (mine is more pastel):Is this not cute? I am so excited! I also grabbed a small special something for a good friend.

Also mentioned is said previous post was that I won a gift card to Good for the Kids from Grammy Janet! And boy, is one little man about to have the play date of his life :-)

This little man, in fact!

My nephew* will be getting some awesome-possum things. But my favorite by far on a wish list I asked his mom to make was a Make-Your-Own Monster Puppet kit. Check out what you could make!
I *heart* this! And cannot wait to see what comes of it!

And now, I should focus on my job. Because I am at my spiffy new job. Yes.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
*The boy I refer to as my nephew is not actually my nephew. He is John (my boyfriend)'s nephew, however, I have been around since before he could do little more than eat, sleep, poop and be adorable as all get-out. Also, as every story I tell needs a sub-story, when I first went to visit his family, I got bribed with the title of aunt. Why? Because I drink soda. And his mom wonderfully asked what kind of pop I drank. and I replied, correctly, that I do not drink pop**, I drink soda. And she proceeded to ask me if I would drink pop for the title of "Auntie H-boo". And I melted and gave in. H-boo is a story for another day.
** I am not from the midwest. Or western Pennsylvania. Or anywhere but here, really. I have people I love there, but...I cannot stand that phrase! NoVA had given me subs, sprinkles, soda, and the metro. I cannot say grinders/hoagies, jimmies/hundreds-and-thousands, pop/cola, or the subway/underground. I am sorry. It just grinds my gears. Please feel free to say it to me, but I will say it my way. I am stubborn :-)
Day 27!
Since it's been so long, I won't be dividing up these into days. Just 3 categories (Worked on, accomplished, and need to work on)
So, without further ado, what has gone on in the past 3 weeks?
Worked on
  • 26: I got a meat grinder from Freecycle, and gave away a clock that I don't use but is still perfectly good. Still need to do this more often, though.
  • 33: John got us both passport applications :-)
  • 40: Certain friend and I have texted each other but we seem to have conflicting schedules :-(
  • 62: The Bloggy Giveaways Carnival certainly helped with this!
  • 67:I labeled 4 of the 6/7 I have set up and have started putting things in them. Started being the key word, there.
  • 85: I try and try. I really do. It's just so hard!
  • 88: We are planning a trip out west! Hopefully, we'll fly out to the Northwest and take a week to drive down the coast before we fly back.
  • 96: Might be seeing these fine folks soon! We just caught up online and are trying to arrange foodstuffs.
Accomplished
  • 7: I got a mattress! And a bed! And will hopefully be able to sleep in them soon if John doesn't give up halfway through assembly (I love having a man around to do these things for me. Really, I do) :-D
  • 8: I also got a vacuum! This Roomba, to be exact. I am embarrassed to say that I hadn't vacuumed my apartment since I got it in...October. 3 months. And 3 months worth of hair and dirt and carpet fuzz came out. and clogged. the. roomba. I had to cut out all the stuff it picked up. Hopefully I won't have to do that again :-) (have I mentioned that I shed hair like a cat?)
  • 18: I got a new job! And it does indeed pay more than $9/hr! I am so excited. So I have 3 jobs on 2 payrolls and get exactly 40 hours/week.s
  • 19: John bought me a pumice stone. He'd heard me complain about not having one, and saw my refusal to buy the ones I noticed ($3 for a piece of lava? SERIOUSLY?). So he got me one!
  • 86: My first issue came today! I am so excited!
Need to work on
  • 22: The Bloggy Carnival added a lot of emails to my list, but it also helped me see what I don't actually read anymore.
  • 23: Norman is seriously hurting my sinuses. I woke up this morning and didn't stop sniffling until I got settled into work 2 hours later.
  • 27: Has anyone tried Vonage? I am intrigued, plus I can get a sweet deal at MicroCenter.
  • 45: I promise that once my apartment is no longer "living area/sleeping area and storage room, I will start having them over more often.
  • 47: I haven't helped at all. It is this weekend. I wonder if they need ushers?
  • 81: I now have 2 jobs that aren't on my resume. Current, relevant ones. Great.
  • 101: Seriously, Hilary, WRITE YOUR BROTHER.
That's it for now. Any tips, tricks, or hints?
Winner and Winnings!
We have a winner!
Lilith over at Crunchy Green Lovin' Mom was the lucky number 45!!!!
I will send yoiu an email, shortly, Lilith. Please respong within 72 hours so I don't have to choose another winner =D
Thank you to all who participated; I had a blast reading the comments. Funny thing, winter is. The day afetr the carnival began, we got the best.worst snowfall so far. IE snow actually stuck and they cancelled local schools. Hahahaha.
~~~~~
Did I mention I won some things, too?
Thanks so much, everyone! I look forward to posting more about my progress in my 1,001 day challenge, and I hope you all stick around!

It has been FOREVER, I know

*Update*
The contest will go until midnight tonight instead of 6 PM
(seems we are going on an IKEA run soon and I'd rather give y'all a few more hours :-P)

Long and short of it, GMU classes started up. I'm not taking classes, but I help those who do. Expect updates soon (I have made FABULOUS progress!).

BUT

This post is special.

This is the beginning of the Bloggy Giveaways Quarterly Carnival!

And, because I am wacky and crazy and sometimes very eager to go green, I am giving away something that is equally so.

My favorite *ahem* menstrual products are those that work and can be reused (and thereby save money and resources!) I have found that my 2 favorite products are the DivaCup and GladRags.

I won't go into any bloody detail**, but take it from me, these products are AWESOME. I have saved countless dollars and spared many-a-panty (the rags are so absorbent...no joke) with these babies.

So without further ado, I present this quarter's giveaway: one reader will get their choice of either a DivaCup or a set of GladRags to help on a start to greener cycles!

The options are:
Both of these are about a $35 value, so be sure you want them before you enter!

To enter, leave a comment about how your winter has been (we FINALLY got snow here this morning, so I am all about winter). This is international, but remember: I need to have a way to contact you. If you don't have a blog, leave your email or a sn, or just email me (in my profile) letting me know what your comment was.

Contest is open until I randomly choose a winner Sunday, February 1st at 6 PM. I will post shortly thereafter who won, and let them know.

Blog Happy!
**If you have any questions about the actual products, just shoot me an email; I don't want to offend anyone with things they don't feel like reading about, but I will gladly sing you the praises if you ask!

Day 4

Whoop! Day 4 was actually more productive than it may seem below; I cleaned a lot, did lots more laundry than I expected to(3 loads after 9 PM!), and was able to fix my schedule for next week. So on to this list.

Accomplished
  • 12: by cleaning my bathroom! Man, was it a great feeling. I'm not a filthy person, but just rinsing the shower with vinegar, sweeping the cat litter that had made its way out of the pan and re-fluffing the bath mats did wonders for my sanity. Also, I discovered that fake-marble-looking counters can hide dirt like crazy.
  • 20: by using a small vase I used to use for pencils at my desk. I put it by the sink so when I empty my pockets it'll be right there.
  • 31: When cleaning my room, I found a bunch of space bags I had forgotten I had! The rolly-up for travel kind. I haven't used them yet, but I'm waiting until I finish washing all of my dirty linens before I pack the ones I never use away.
  • 53: Well I'll be darned, I forgot that 2 of my good friends have birthdays this month. Luckily I got a good nudge from another friend, so I will be shopping for their gifts today!
  • 72: Yep.
  • 85: I fell behind, but John saved me. A local restaurant, Brion's Grille, has the BEST cheese sticks we've ever had. They are famous for their jack sticks, and recently, they added pepper jack sticks. I prefer these over mozzarella any day. So we got some, but I only had 1 1/2. John was noble and ate the rest for me :-)
Worked on
  • 21: by looking up the Wikipedia article on the subject. It still confuses me.
  • 48: It has come to my attention that I really need to hem my pants. A woman at work told me I should hem them and then offered to do it for me because she has a sewing machine. So...I'm going to be hemming my pants soon.
  • 75: by reading QC today and using Google Reader. I had never used it before, but it manages the blogs I follow really well and you can just keep scrolling down and it will show older posts until you stop scrolling. This is immense.
  • 98: By doing laundry so I have some clean socks!
More updates later today.

About # 85

Milk and I have a disturbing relationship.
I love milk. I love drinking milk (whole, 2%, skim, whatever) and eating all forms of milk I've ever tried (all cheeses, yogurt, ice cream, sour cream, you name it).

Milk used to love me back.

But about a year and a half ago (around July/August 2007) my body started reacting very strangely whenever I had milk. It took me about a week to figure out that it was the dairy causing me to be sick, but sure enough it was. When I eliminated it I was fine.

When this started, I was able to drink Lactaid milk or eat anything with cheese, but only 2-3 servings per day before I would get ill.

Story time!

As I am a college student, I kind of live on cereal and hot pockets (I did, at least. Not so much now). Those tasty little hot hand sandwiches are generally glued together with various forms of cheese. And one day John and I were taking a trip to Williamsburg. To make sure his car was OK for the trip, we went out in the morning to check his tires or his oil (I am unsure of which), and I grabbed a quick breakfast: a hot pocket. I knew that it was bad for my stomach, so I also took a Lactaid pill as directed: with a glass of milk. I was eating my pocket, and halfway to the repair shop, I asked John to pull over. My stomach wrenched. I ran into a gas station bathroom and had to stay there for 15 minutes to make sure I wouldn't ruin John's upholstery.

We may have gotten his car looked at (my memory is fuzzy), and then John, two of our friends, and I piled into his car for the trip down. I assured everyone I was ok, and I had my typical sick-day supplies of matzoh and ginger ale. We got almost to exit 130/Fredericksburg on I-95 before the milk hit me again. I got sick all over John's car and myself and had to change clothes on the highway (I am glad it was an over0night, or else I wouldn't have had any extra clothes!). Thirty minutes later, we left F-burg, and I was fine. My stomach just had to get the milk out.

After that, I could only have 1 serving of "wet" milk per day, but 2 "dry" milks (a small ice cream or bowl of cereal was ok, as was a few slices of pizza/anything with cheese).

As of now, I can only have hard cheeses (ie Cheddars, Swiss, anything aged) and 1-2 slices of pizza, if I am lucky (I do better with "cooked" milk. Baked goods don't bother me, and melted cheese seems to work better than raw). More than a serving of cheese still bothers me, but not right away.

John and I have researched and tested, and figured out that I am not lactose-intolerant. I can have certain things that LI people can't. Also, my reactions are much more immediate. Any liquid milk I have generally "comes back up" within 5-10 minutes. Ice cream, milk, even Lactaid milk sometimes.

Sorry for the off-topic post, but it is important to me. Milk is my dream drink, but my body rejects it. And I have to learn to accept that, grudgingly as it may be.

Days 2 & 3

The last few days have been decently productive. I feel bad because most of my "Accomplish This!" tasks are ongoing, so I can't officially check off that I have completed things.

I have accomplished

  • 14: by having an AWESOME date day/night walking through Dupont Circle/Georgetown with John. Not a full day, but a day full of excellent. (Chop't and Krispy Kreme and Dean & Deluca...ok so we are foodies but at least we know it)
  • 23: by using the medication that currently is best for me (Chlorpheniramine Maleate; yes I used the medical name so I guess that means I'm getting closer to #54, too?)
  • 72: still private, but its a daily thing, so keep expecting to see this. Nyah.
  • 85: This is one of those ongoing ones. I haven't had milk (or anything milk-based that will hurt me) since last week.
  • 91: by saying GARN! I have stuck with "garn" for a good while now, but I feel that it would be greatly improved if I added a few syllables or just added to my repertoire.
I have worked on
  • 7: by re-testing the IKEA mattresses I want (FĂ…VANG, HEBERG ; why do they capitalize everything? They seem so angry...) when I went shopping with my stepmom yesterday. Maybe a purchase is upcoming?
  • 29: by using my inhaler. I've never been one to take meds on a timetable (go figure, I work in a pharmacy), so I've missed a few doses, but at least I haven't shoved it in the medicine closet and ignored it for a month (which I may have done in the past, maybe)
  • 76: by continuing reading the Duggar's book. Fascinating people. Seriously. I love this book.
And that's all the updates that are fit to blog!
